After the 2008 Russia-Georgia war, the facts of detention of Georgian and foreign citizens near the occupation line – both in the territory controlled by the central government of Georgia and in the territory occupied by Russia – became more frequent.

Similar facts happen more often near the occupation line of Tskhinvali region. Some of the detainees are released in return for payment of fines for the de facto regime, while others are illegally detained for months or in some cases years.

The interactive map created by the Rondel Foundation collects open source information on cases of illegal detention of citizens, including video and photographs. The map shows when, where and under what circumstances citizens were illegally detained. In addition, the information on the map is updatable – every new case of illegal detention is added to the map.
