This is a special issue of the Rondeli Russian Military Digest dedicated to the Russo-Ukrainian War, composed on the basis of numerous open sources. Intense battles continued during the reported period northwest and west of Kyiv, including Irpin-Bucha-Hostomel area as well as a number of other spots. Russians failed to advance on Kyiv or to make progress in blocking it from the west. East of Kyiv, attacking Russian forces made small advances but did not manage to reach the city of Brovary that guards Kyiv’s eastern flank. Cities of Chernihiv and Sumy remained in Ukrainian hands, as well as a number of other cities in northeastern Ukraine that had been attacked by Russians, including Okhtyrka and Lebedyn.

Previously reported Ukrainian counterattack in this area appears to have taken place on the Ukrainian right flank of Kharkiv, with Ukrainian forces coming close to the Russian border in the area of the town of Vovchansk. Ukrainian forces kept defending the area of Severodonetsk. Northwest of Severodonetsk, Russian forces entered the city of Izyum, but failed to take it outright, with fighting continuing in the city as of the afternoon of 9 March.
Severodonetsk area and attack on Izyum The siege of Mariupol continued with fighting taking place in the outskirts of the city. Russians kept consolidating their control in the areas immediately north and northwest of Mariupol, although they were not able to take over the town of Volnovakha where fighting continued during the reported period. In the area southeast of Zaporizhzhia, the town of Tokmak was confirmed to be in Russian hands during the reported period. Russians made some advances towards the towns of Hulyaipole and Orikhiv in this area, but faced Ukrainian resistance and did not reach these towns.
