The North Caucasian Tribune

The Russian Federation borders Georgia with the North Caucasus region. The administrative entities in this region are united in two federal districts of Russia – the Southern federal district and the North Caucasian federal district.

Georgia’s relationship with the North Caucasus region has been historically difficult and complicated. As this region is part of the Russian Federation, Georgia-North Caucasus relations are generally discussed in the context of Russia-Georgia relations.

After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia’s hostile and aggressive foreign policy toward Georgia, support for separatism in the regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, and subsequent conflicts that resulted in the occupation of these two Georgian regions were all conducted from the North Caucasus. Today, the Russian armed forces stationed in the North Caucasus present a constant threat to Georgia’s sovereignty.

The unstable political situation in this region, social upheavals and negative developments can hinder development of the Caucasus region as a whole, and negatively impact the interests of Georgia.

The North Caucasus itself is an interesting region in terms of ethnic and cultural diversity. Observation and study of this region has always been a subject of interest to researchers and the general public.
