Geostrategic Activities

Numerous movements of Russian forces in the westward direction continued to be spotted in many parts of the Russian Federation during the week of 17-23 January 2022. A development of crucial importance during the week was the entrance of large forces of the Russian Eastern Military District into Belarus and their deployment to various bases in that country. Besides large number of ground combat forces, at least two battalions of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems and Su-35S fighters have also been delivered to Belarus from the Eastern Military District along with Iskander-M short-range ballistic missile systems. Due to geography, the large Russian deployment to Belarus raised concerns about potential Russian attack towards Ukrainian capital Kyiv in case of a major Russian offensive against Ukraine.
